Ovum Pickup in IVF: A Complete Guide

Ovum pickup in IVF is a key step in the IVF process. It refers to the procedure where mature eggs are collected from a woman’s ovaries. This is done so that the eggs can be fertilized with sperm in the lab, usually through ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

This stage is crucial for couples undergoing IVF. A successful ovum pickup in IVF improves the chances of creating healthy embryos.

What Happens During Ovum Pickup?

The ovum pickup or egg collection technique involves transvaginal aspiration of oocytes from the ovarian follicle using an ultrasound probe. This is a non-invasive procedure. The patient is advised not to eat anything for at least 6 hours and not to drink for 4 hours before the procedure.

Just before the procedure, the patient is asked to empty her bladder. The IVF egg collection is done under general or local intravenous anesthesia. A thin long needle is passed through the vaginal fornix under ultrasound guidance. This helps visualize the ovaries and egg-containing follicles.

The tip of the needle is inserted into each follicle to aspirate follicular fluid that contains oocytes. The process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Once the ovum pickup is completed, the patient can take a short rest and go home the same day.

After IVF egg collection: What to Expect

The eggs collected are fertilized in vitro on the same day of egg retrieval. They are then placed in an incubator until the embryo reaches a stage suitable for transfer into the uterus.

After the ovum pickup in IVF, some women may experience mild discomfort, cramping, or spotting. Follow these care tips:

  • Avoid driving immediately after the procedure

  • Avoid heavy physical activities

  • Rest for a day or two

  • If you feel nausea, vomiting, or lower abdominal pain, take the medicines prescribed by your gynecologist

  • In case of sharp abdominal pain, fever, or vaginal bleeding, contact your gynecologist immediately

Importance of IVF egg collection

This step is critical because without collecting the eggs, the IVF process cannot move forward. By performing a well-timed and safe ovum pickup in IVF, doctors increase the chance of fertilization and a healthy pregnancy.
