What is In Vitro Fertilisation : A simple guide
How IVF Works
During IVF, eggs are taken from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized by a man’s sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then placed back into the woman’s uterus. Total time taken for complete treatment is about three months.
IVF doesn’t always have to use your own eggs and your partner’s sperm. You can also use eggs, sperm, or embryos from donors. This is done after full transparent counselling and consent.

The success of IVF depends on factors like age and health conditions. Tests before IVF include:
Ovarian Stimulation
Usually, a woman produces one egg a month. IVF needs multiple eggs, so medicines are given to stimulate the ovaries. This process takes 1-2 weeks, with ultrasound scan and blood tests to monitor progress.
Egg Retrieval
Eggs are collected using a needle guided by an ultrasound. This takes about 20 minutes.
Sperm Retrieval
Sperm is collected from a partner or donor in the lab.
Fertilization
Embryo Transfer
2-3 days after egg retrieval, a thin tube (catheter) is used to place the embryo(s) into the uterus.
After IVF, patients should avoid vigorous activities but can otherwise follow a normal routine.
A pregnancy test is done 12 days to 2 weeks after egg retrieval using blood or urine. Gheeth IVF has more than 85% success rate.Â
