What is In Vitro Fertilisation

What is In Vitro Fertilisation : A simple guide

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical treatment that helps people have a baby when other treatments haven’t worked.

How IVF Works

During IVF, eggs are taken from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized by a man’s sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then placed back into the woman’s uterus. Total time taken for complete treatment is about three months.

IVF doesn’t always have to use your own eggs and your partner’s sperm. You can also use eggs, sperm, or embryos from donors. This is done after full transparent counselling and consent.

When is IVF Needed?

IVF might be needed if:

  • Fertility drugs or intrauterine insemination -IUI (placing sperm directly in the uterus) didn’t work.
  • The fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged.
  • Ovulation doesn’t happen often.
  • There’s endometriosis, where tissue grows outside the uterus and affects the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
  • There are uterine fibroids, which are tumors in the uterus.
  • You have undergone family planning surgery like tubal sterilisation.
  • Husband has problem with sperm count, movement, size, or shape.

In Vitro Fertilisation at Gheeth IVF

1. Tests and Preparations

The success of IVF depends on factors like age and health conditions. Tests before IVF include:

  • Ovarian reserve testing to check the quality and quantity of eggs. This is done using AMH Test
  • Semen analysis for husban.
  • Examining the uterus lining using hysteroscopy for those requiring it.

2. In Vitro Fertilisation Steps

Ovarian Stimulation
Usually, a woman produces one egg a month. IVF needs multiple eggs, so medicines are given to stimulate the ovaries. This process takes 1-2 weeks, with ultrasound scan and blood tests to monitor progress.

Egg Retrieval
Eggs are collected using a needle guided by an ultrasound. This takes about 20 minutes.

Sperm Retrieval
Sperm is collected from a partner or donor in the lab.

Fertilization

  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): A single healthy sperm is injected directly into an egg, used if sperm count is low. This is superior than normal IVF.

Embryo Transfer
2-3 days after egg retrieval, a thin tube (catheter) is used to place the embryo(s) into the uterus.

3. Post In Vitro Fertilisation Care

After IVF, patients should avoid vigorous activities but can otherwise follow a normal routine.

What is In Vitro Fertilisation Results?

A pregnancy test is done 12 days to 2 weeks after egg retrieval using blood or urine. Gheeth IVF has more than 85% success rate.
